CHAPTER TEN

Albert decided to stay the night in order for us to formulate a plan. He’d already made some telephone calls to ask his men to find out as much as possible about one Peter Clairmont.

He’d also called Jerry, and once he’d explained the situation had asked that he get the next train down so he could talk to him face-to-face about what he knew.

Now Ginny was upstairs making up a room, whilst I was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

Shortly before six Jerry walked in, shaking out his umbrella and removing his sodden top-coat. I hadn’t noticed but it had started to rain quite heavily.

“Why, Jerry, you’re soaked! There’s a fire lit in the drawing room. Go and get warm, and help yourself to a drink. Albert’s already in there. He can tell you about today’s events,” I said.

“Thank you, Ella.” He looked round appreciatively. “I must say I can see why you fell in love with this place, although it’s certainly bigger than you led me to believe.” He bent and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. “You should have told me about the ghosts, you know. I would have understood.”

“But would you have believed me? They’re two quite different things.”

He shrugged. “I most probably would have wanted proof like Albert. Perhaps you could organise that for later, do you think? I must say I’m rather intrigued.”

“Well … I can’t promise anything. I’d have to ask Milly. She’s not a performing monkey, you know.” Although Phantom was another story entirely, I thought. That last display surprised even me.

“I’ll see what I can do. Now run along and get dry, and keep Albert company. He won’t admit it but I think he’s had rather a shock today.”

As I was getting the roast out of the oven, I heard Albert say, “Jerry, good to see you, old boy. Thanks for coming down at such short notice. Got ourselves a bit of a mystery here which I’m hoping you can help with. I thought we’d discuss it properly with the girls over dinner. By the way, I got that latest book of yours. Fabulous stuff, and I didn’t see the woman being the murderer.”

“Well, that’s a terrific compliment coming from the Police Commissioner, I must say,” replied Jerry.

At that moment Ginny came waltzing down the stairs in yet another outfit and went to greet Jerry. “Darling, how good of you to come. It’s so lovely to see you. And what do you think of the cottage? Marvellous, isn’t it? Wait until you see our room, it’s simply glorious. Now if you boys would deal with the wine, I’ll help Ella with the food.” A second later I heard the telephone ring and Ginny call out, “Albert, it’s for you.” I assumed that meant there was some news.

Once we were all seated Albert got straight to the point.

“That was Detective Inspector Wilkes on the phone and he’s found out a very interesting little tidbit about our Mr. Clairmont. But before I tell you more I’d like to hear what Jerry knows.
